Since the 1500's independent travellers and explorers have used Swellendam as the gateway between Cape Town and the South African interior or Garden Route. The historical town of Swellendam is the third oldest town in South Africa and is rich in heritage and remains a popular stop over, allowing travellers the opportunity to relax, reflect, recharge and enjoy the many attractions and activities.
Swellendam is the perfect place to set up base camp and explore the surrounds of Cape Agulhas, Robertson, Malgas, Buffeljachts, Bonnievale or Ashton with much to offer a variety of adventure activities. Resting between the Langeberg Mountains and the N2 highway, approximately 240km from both Cape Town and George, Swellendam is the perfect choice for a halfway stopover and as a base from which to explore the area, with great day excursions safaris and tours to Robertson,

Swellendam Backpackers Hostel is an official Baz Bus stop and the hop-on hop-off backpackers bus service is a convenient, flexible and safe way to visit Swellendam and will drop you off at our front door. Swellendam has three nature reserves on the door step and the in-house guides will plan your action packed and adventure filled days. Enjoy a game drive in Sanbona Private Game Reserve, the first private game reserve in the Western Cape to host free roaming lion and cheetah or a mountain bike or horse trail through one of the Nature Reserves. Whether its sipping a glass of Robertson Wine around the fire, lazing in a hammock with a favourite book or enjoying one of the many hiking, mountain biking and horse riding trails you are after... you'll find all of this and more at Swellendam Backpacking Hostel.
